A total of 151 homes have been handed over to vulnerable Jamaicans under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP), benefitting more than 523 persons. The programme, which targets persons living in substandard conditions, and seeks to improve the living condition of Jamaica’s most vulnerable by providing quality, affordable and sustainable housing. New Social Housing Benefits Vulnerable Jamaicans
More than 523 Jamaicans have benefitted from 151 homes built and delivered under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) since its inception in 2018.
The initiative was conceptualised by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, and is being implemented under the Government’s Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) Programme, with oversight by the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.
It aims, among other things, to improve the living condition of Jamaica’s most vulnerable through the provision of quality, affordable and sustainable housing.
Target beneficiaries are persons living in substandard conditions; the elderly; persons suffering from disabilities or ill-health; and persons who have been displaced due to fire or natural disaster.
The programme will entail, among other things, the provision of indigent housing equitably distributed across all 63 constituencies, with each receiving five units per annum.
Approximately 315 housing units are targeted for delivery under this phase annually.
Several beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the programme’s implementation.
Georgette Moving of Bamboo Ridge in St. Catherine South Western, who received a home in June, says her dream has come true.
“For so many years, I would like to own a house, especially for my daughter, [who is] going to Central High [and] doing very well in school. I always [wanted] to have a clean environment and better facilities for her, so that she can have… peace of mind that she can study to continue to pursue her dreams in life,” she said.
Prime Minister Holness has said the NSHP is about the State fulfilling its duty to protect its most vulnerable and most needy.
