The Government has commenced the procurement of 300 mixed energy buses, being acquired to increase the Jamaica Urban Transit Company’s (JUTC) fleet over three years.
One hundred (100) new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, valued approximately US$20 million, arrived in July, bringing the total number of units acquired since May 2023 to one hundred and seventy (170).
These are smart buses which are equipped with a suite of systems that will enable the JUTC to better manage and optimise its services to improve the general commuter experience. Importantly, the buses are equipped to facilitate persons with disabilities.
Two hundred (200) additional buses are to be acquired, of which 100 are anticipated to arrive in June or July 2025.
The JUTC will also be carrying out phased reconditioning of 105 buses for re-introduction into the public transportation system.
These units are being refurbished at a cost of US$70,000, with a two-year warranty and a life span of 10 additional years.
Work on the first 20 is slated between April and December 2024, with additional five units expected to be completed by May 2025.
